Instructions for Patients

Strict adherence to the following instructions after oral surgery will greatly aid in speedy recovery and reduce the risk of potential complications.

a) Bleeding is to be expected after any oral surgery. b) In case it is excessive, wrap a piece of sterile gauze (about a finger thick), place it on the bleeding spot, bite it and keep it under pressure for at least 30 minutes of the hour. c) If it does not stop, change the gauze and repeat for another half hour.

Pain is normal after any oral surgery. To treat it, you will take the prescribed pain medication as directed.

The appearance of swelling in the area of the operation is possible. This is normal. Its duration is about 4 days (up to the 2nd it increases and from the 4th it decreases). To reduce it, as much as possible, place an ice pack or ice cubes wrapped in a towel over the operation area (externally), every 10/minute until you fall asleep, on the day of the operation. If the swelling continues to increase on the 4th day and the pain continues or increases, contact us. Bruising on the skin is also possible and normal.

A slight increase in temperature is normal and not alarming. This will subside with recovery. If it continues unabated, please contact us.

Especially, in wisdom tooth extraction such difficulty often occurs. In this case you should make an effort to open it slowly even if you have to do it with the help of your fingers.

If you experience chapped or dry lips, apply cocoa butter or petroleum jelly to keep them moist.

If stitches have been placed, these may cause some "pulling" after a few days. These will resolve with their removal 7 days after surgery. Breaking one or more stitches is not a concern.

From the day after the operation, you will wash with warm chamomile or salt water 4 to 5 times a day for 5-7 days, while you will also start brushing your teeth, paying attention to the area of the operation. There, from the third day, you will brush with gentle movements initially, while gradually the cleaning in the area should be done like the other teeth. The hygiene of the mouth and the operation area especially, must be perfect because it is very basic for the healing to take place correctly and quickly.

On the day of the operation you should not rinse your mouth, brush your teeth or spit.

During the first 24 hours, the food must be wet and cold (milk, yogurt, ice cream, juices, etc.). The next 2 days must be of medium hardness (potatoes, rice, spaghetti, minced meat, etc.). From the 7th day you can return to your daily eating habits. It is best to avoid chewing on the side of the operation until the 7th day.

If you have been prescribed any medications, you should take them according to the instructions given to you in order to avoid possible complications.
